Tramlines Music Festival
Steel city cult-favourite Tramlines festival was the first full capacity metropolitan music festival to go ahead in the summer of 2021 as part of the Government Event Research Programme.
After an incredibly tough and tense year for the events industry, huge hopes were pinned on the handful of events selected as tests to see whether high capacity events could go ahead safely with covid-19 still in general circulation.
In a predictable pandemic fashion, things moved fast. With just five weeks to prepare after the first discussions with the DCMS, Tramlines was due to welcome 120,000 punters over the course of the three-day festival.
Tramlines would be the biggest event of its kind in Europe since the pandemic started (BBC – via organisers) and would play a key role in determining the short to medium term future of the large events business.
The main stage (Star Live) hosted the likes of The Streets, Royal Blood, Richard Ashcroft, and a raft of local and international talent, and would be dressed with a bold, floral design commemorating the life of the Festival’s founder, Sarah Nulty.
We worked closely event production team Method Events, organisers and stage providers, proposing alternative material choices and artwork layouts to ensure the stage looked its best and would integrate with the iMAG LED screens and stage’s PA system.
Branding was delivered to the site for installation and everything ran smoothly. Attendee Niamh, speaking to the BBC, said of the festival that it felt ‘like we’re living again’ – we can’t ask for much more than that!
